Novell Announces NetWare Global MHS v2.0
Enhances the NetWare Messaging Environment
BOSTON, MA--January 11, 1993 -- Novell, Inc. today announced an upgrade to its
NetWare Global MHS- (Formerly, NetWare Global Messaging) server. The new
version answers customers' requests for a basic electronic mail utility,
passive server support, improved asynchronous communications, new modem
support and enhanced security.
NetWare Global MHS is a scalable messaging server designed for NetWare
environments ranging from small businesses to large, diverse computing
enterprises. It is a set of NetWare Loadable Modules (NLMs) that enables
NetWare to provide a reliable, cost-effective messaging infrastructure. As a
messaging platform, NetWare Global MHS supports a wide variety of
store-and-forward messaging services, including electronic mail, workflow
automation, scheduling and fax services.
"Customers building NetWare-based networks are seeking messaging solutions
that build on their investments," said Arvind Agrawal, vice president and
general manager of the Messaging Products Division for Novell, Inc. "With
this release of NetWare Global MHS, we reaffirm our commitment to satisfying
our customers by establishing and supporting messaging as an integrated
infrastructure service for NetWare environments."
New Features
NetWare Global MHS now includes FirstMail- for DOS and Macintosh platforms.
FirstMail is a starter electronic mail utility that will allow users to have
an MHS messaging solution right out of the box. This utility will provide
basic electronic mail functionality, while still providing the "freedom of
choice" to select from a wide selection of award-winning messaging
applications from third-party vendors.
Passive Server support satisfies customer requests for greater flexibility in
configuration. It distributes the NetWare Global MHS mailboxes on up to eight
NetWare servers, which allows a single copy of NetWare Global MHS to collect
and route messages for mailboxes resident at other NetWare servers.
In addition, efficiency of bi-directional asynchronous message transfers have
been improved to minimize telephone charges. New modem support has also been
added for Telebit's T1000, T1600 and Intel's 2400 EX. This further expands
the range of hardware choices available to NetWare Global MHS users.
Sender validation has been built in to integrate Novell's messaging services
with NetWare security. This feature confirms that every message originated by
a user is matched to the current NetWare login name.
A new feature called mail notification has been added for checking new mail at
a user's client workstation. With this feature, a user is notified with a
standard NetWare broadcast message when an electronic mail message has
arrived. Users do not have to leave the application they are in to receive
this message.
NetWare Global MHS includes a trigger mechanism, which enables document
translation NLMs to plug into the NetWare Global MHS server. The first
available NLM is provided by Keyword Office Technologies for document
translation of message attachments for the most popular word processors.
Document translation allows users to send a message attachment in one word
processing package and retrieve it in another with no extra steps.
NetWare Global MHS fully supports the SNADS, SMTP and X.400 protocol modules,
along with all MHS applications. This provides an effective platform for
integrating a variety of messaging services across diverse platforms.
Availability
NetWare Global MHS is available now through Novell's authorized resellers.
The suggested list price is (U.S. Dollars) $495 for 20 mailboxes, $895 for 50
mailboxes, $1,495 for 100 mailboxes, $2,695 for 250 mailboxes and $7,495 for
1000 mailboxes. A single copy of NetWare Global MHS can service multiple
NetWare servers and be installed on any version of NetWare v3.11.
